Flower cushion.

15 Oct

“Cacao flowers are produced from former leaf axils. On old branches, this area becomes swollen and enlarged after many years of flowering and fruiting from the same place. This structure is called a “flower cushion”. Typically, only one or two mature fruits develop from each, but sometimes a whole cluster forms. It’s important to not damage these cushions during harvesting as the structures can continue to bear flowers for the life of the tree.
